Even during formally coordinated parts, the quartet paints with broad strokes, blurring lines and shifting about to defy expectations. Bluiett's brief "Bits 'n' Pieces" presents darker hues, with greater harmonic and tonal complexity. The improvisation here is open-ended and moody. And with John Purcell's "The New Chapter," the quartet explores sonorities made possible through overdubbing. The WSQ's first experiment of this kind, Purcell's tune explores denser harmonies and allows players the opportunity to improvise over arranged segments. Recorded at a performance by the Billy Bang Quintet at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, MI on April 28, 2003 and captured using a laptop running ProTools, it was to be the last recorded appearance of tenor sax great Frank Lowe, who died four months later from lung cancer. While it is obvious at times during the evening that wind is a priority for Lowe (he only had one lung at this point), this is far from a shaky outing for him, and his short, lyrical lines are central to this stunning set.

Bang and Lowe were unknowingly at the endgame of their long collaboration together (they first began working together in the mid-'70s) during this two week tour, and the whole unit ( Andy Bemkey on piano, Todd Nicholson on bass, and Tatsuya Nakatani on drums) is sharp and focused, easing into each selection gently, allowing the musicians to find a center, then building and growing the improvisations in a natural flow before gliding back to the main theme for compositional resolve. The result is a kind of free jazz moving with -- as opposed to against -- a melodic center, and even when these selections slide to the atonal side, it all fits and manages to be both surprising and expected at the same time, which means this set is wonderfully accessible. Bang's violin work is as fresh and vital as always, and one quickly forgets the oddity of a violin at the center of a jazz combo as Bang and Lowe play off of and around each other with a sharp but free flowing precision that only comes with a deep respect and familiarity for each other's talent and range.

The powerful "Dark Silhouette" is the emotional center of this performance, but all four selections are a tangible part of a whole, and it is a disservice to this album to look at it any other way. Pianist D.D. Jackson follows these modern traditionalist lines, while unheralded bassist Akira Ando holds up things nicely, and drummer Ronnie Burrage constructs and deconstructs rhythms in rapid-fire fashion. Of the standards, played within the tradition, all are easily identifiable and enjoyable. "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a most vibrant rendition of the other side of Stephane Grappelli -- straight, swinging, and yes, incorporating some low-atmosphere blasts and scrapings. "Yesterdays" has Jackson setting off sparklers with his now characteristic Don Pullen-like, hand-turned rumblings. "Willow Weep for Me" is a neat changeup on the well-known ballad; instead, it's a down-home blues, flowing from wistful crying to a river of tears.

Bang writes engaging material for this quartet, and likes to mix messages. The R&B bass ostinato against bubbling Latin rhythm sets Burrage ablaze during "Don's Dream," while more funky blues and a simple melody works with a complex, acid-tinged Bang solo on "Three Faces of Eve." The hippest of modern compositions, "Spirits Entering" is rambunctious, loaded with changes -- many on the spot -- and framed by modal piano. Jackson constantly challenges rhythmic parameters and melodic barriers, while Bang follows suit. Both are at the top of their game on this one. "'Bama Swing" might turn out to be a standard; certainly it's a signature piece for the violinist, a very tuneful, straight swinger wiith both plucked and bowed melody lines which any listener should appreciate. This is Billy Bang's finest recorded hour -- a hallmark for modern jazz violin in the 1990s, and a strong candidate for best jazz CD of 1997. - Michael G. The singer-songwriter in question is country-pop whiz (and, later, Tony-winning Broadway composer) Roger Miller, the Texan tunesmith best known for such mid-'60s novelties as "Dang Me," "England Swings" and his signature hit "King of the Road"--none of which number among the half-dozen Miller compositions included here.

Instead, Arioli--working as always alongside guitar virtuoso and arranger Jordan Officer--digs deeper to unearth such treasures as "Less and Less," "Husbands and Wives," "Half a Mind" and "A World I Can't Live In," each a glorious testament to Miller's talent for clever wordplay. Rounding out this cashmere-soft set are a hauntingly tender treatment of Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz's equally self-reflective "By Myself" and two original Officer instrumentals that suggest the hypnotic lure of Santo and Johnny infused with a spicy splash of Les Baxter.

-Christopher Loudon

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/8477/2768/products/ffa60475-c518-457a-8d33-f30522f0579113128330935889120190-LARGE_3ca505a5-add5-43be-aac1-4427abc39bc5.jpg?v=1615680534
steve-haines-and-the-third-floor-orchestra-feat-becca-stevens-chad-eby-joey-calderazzo
Steve Haines and the Third Floor Orchestra (feat.
