Ed Thigpen, a native of Chicago, is perhaps best known for his part in the superb Oscar Peterson Trio that lasted from 1959 to 1965. He is highly respected and there is virtually nothing he can't perform on a drum kit - he's a real marvel. He uses brushes as expertly as sticks, can provide a driving, steady beat, can vary the pulse, and can solo with a joyous flair.
He has worked with Cootie Williams, Dinah Washington, Johnny Hodges, Lennie Tristano, Bud Powell, Billy Taylor, Ella Fitzgerald, Dexter Gordon, and many others. He has recorded as a leader for Verve, GNP Crescendo, Reckless, Timeless and Justin Time. He lives in Chicago and Copenhagen.
